QPR lose Samba Diakite to African Cup of Nations

Samba Diakite: In action for QPR against Aston Villa

The defensive midfielder is expected to join up with his international team-mates on January 5.

He could be out until mid-February should the Eagles reach the final.

Diakite's absence will be a big blow to QPR, who are eight points adrift of safety at the bottom of the Premier League.

The 23-year-old's call-up follows better news in regards to Adel Taarabt, who was left out of the Morocco squad last week.

Mick McCarthy keen on deal for QPR striker DJ Campbell

Mick McCarthy: 'I've spoken to DJ and we've offered him permanent de

The 31-year-old has scored 10 goals in 16 games to help ignite Town's mini revival but will returns to parent club QPR after Tuesday's game against Brighton.

"He'll go back and we'll see what happens after that," said McCarthy. "I think Harry Redknapp, in his position, will want to have a look at him. It was always the case that he was going to go back.

"We are trying to do a deal to keep him and hopefully we can. Fingers crossed, we'll see.

"We're speaking to his agent, I've spoken to DJ and we've offered him permanent deal effectively. There's a permanent deal there for him if that's what he wants to do.

"He loves it here though and I think he'd be happy to stay provided we can do a deal with his agent and QPR. There's a lot there to be dealt with.

"I'm conscious that we can't leave things too late in the window. I am actively looking and speaking to people about other players."

Harry Redknapp not giving up hope after QPR's defeat by Liverpool

Rock-bottom Rangers gave up three goals in 13 calamitous first-half minutes to settle the contest and stayed eight points from safety.

"I still feel we'll be okay," Redknapp told Sky Sports. "I think we will look to get one or two in, there are some good lads here anyway, I think it's possible. It's my belief we'll be okay.

"It's not easy getting players in at this stage at the bottom of the league, but if someone is up for the challenge, it's a great chance.

"We need new faces and if we get the right players we can make a real effort. We have some hard games to come but there is a long way to go. You could have 10 games to go and need 20 points and it can be done.

"Don't give up, we have to keep believing, keep going. Those that are with us are with us, those that aren't, we'll try and do something.

"It did hurt, but what can you do? It's hard. It can happen, being smashed by Liverpool. It can happen on their day."

QPR in Cole talks - Report

Joe Cole: Expected to leave Liverpool in January

The former England international, who earns a reported 90,000 a week, is expected to leave Anfield in January as he does not feature in Brendan Rodgers' long-term plans.

According to Sky sources, QPR manager Harry Redknapp hopes to take advantage and lure Cole to Loftus Road to help in their fight against Premier League relegation.

The playmaker was not a member of Liverpool's squad in Sunday's comfortable win at QPR, which ensured the London club stayed bottom of the table.

And Cole's absence has only increased speculation he will be on the move when the transfer window opens next week.

QPR 0 Liverpool 3: Luis Suarez and Daniel Agger score in win at Loftus Road

Luis Suarez: Scored twice in the opening 16 minutes at Loftus Road

In the final Premier League fixture of 2012, Rodgers was not at Loftus Road due to a virus and the visitors from Merseyside were instead led by first-team coaches Colin Pascoe and Mike Marsh.

But the nonattendance of their manager did little to hurt Liverpool, who bounced back from the Boxing Day defeat by Stoke City with a double from the superb Luiz Suarez and a Daniel Agger header in the first half.

QPR, meanwhile, head in to 2013 seemingly needing a miracle to escape relegation after Harry Redknapp saw his team at times torn to shreds by their opponents' waves of attacks in London.

Liverpool started much the better team and their superior passing soon led to the opening goal as Suarez turned Clint Hill outside the box before advancing into the penalty area and firing past Julio Cesar after just 10 minutes.

Uruguay international Suarez was running the QPR defence ragged and, only six minutes later, he doubled the score when finishing fr om close range after his initial cross-shot had been blocked straight back to his feet by Nedum Onuoha.

Redknapp's rock-bottom Premier League hosts were getting ripped apart by attack after attack from Liverpool and, with a sense of inevitability, Agger made it 3-0 in the 28th minute with fine header from Steven Gerrard's right-wing cross.

Liverpool continued their onslaught and captain Gerrard was unfortunate not to add a fourth before half-time when his 18-yard effort ricocheted off several QPR defenders before somehow failing to cross the goalline.

Redknapp stood shaking his head on the touchline, having started the game already at the foot of the table and eight points adrift of safety, and he heard his team, still with just one league win this season, booed off at the interval.

QPR replaced former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse with Shaun Derry for the second half and they improved, clinging to the hope of a repeat of last season's comeback against the same opponents, who blew a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 in London in March.

But Cesar was still busy to prevent Suarez from completing his hat-trick with an 18-yard shot, Onuoha just beat Gerrard to what would have been a goalscoring header and Jordan Henderson blazed over when well placed.

Liverpool's afternoon was only soured when losing left-back Jose Enrique to an apparent hamstring injury in the latter stages before the final whistle.

Stephane Mbia believes QPR can still avoid relegation from the Premier League

Stephane Mbia: Still believes QPR can survive

QPR are currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League but the summer arrival from France remains optimistic.

"Sure, the short term looks difficult because we haven't won enough games but this is a challenge," Mbia told the Guardian.

"We have senior players in the squad who can inspire the others and, even if this is all new to me, I have experience.

"I have come from a club expecting to challenge for the title to one struggling at the bottom but we can survive. Yes, yes, yes, we can survive.

"We're learning every week. We have a manager who will get the best out of us so, if we stay united and keep working, it'll come."

Difficult

Mbia arrived in England with a big reputation following his exploits with Marseille and Cameroon but the 26-year-old admits it has been a difficult challenge so far.

"I'd spoken to Souleymane Diawara at Marseille and to Alex Song before he went to Barcelona, and they both said I'd do well here in this league", added Mbia.

"But it has still surprised me. The football's so intense. It's like the Champions League, almost the same level, and there's never any let-up.

"Back in France I used to go through some games without breaking into a sweat but here you can't catch your breath.

"Whether I'm playing in midfield or at the back, I'm up against giants and you take so much physical damage. I come away exhausted, covered in cuts and bruises.

"Against West Ham Andy Carroll had caught me with an elbow and, when I complained to the referee, he just said: 'Welcome to England.' I just thought 'Wow'. And I'm big, I'm strong but it's still taken its toll."

QPR target Hammers star Diame

Mohamed Diame: QPR have made a bid for the West Ham midfielder

QPR boss Harry Redknapp is desperate to bring in new faces next month as he looks to steer the club clear of relegation and he has made Diame one of his top targets.

Redknapp is ready to exploit Diame's release clause in his West Ham contract which is thought to be 3.5million.

All-action midfielder Diame has been a revelation for West Ham since his arrival on a free transfer from Wigan last summer.

A number of clubs have been keeping tabs on his progress at Upton Park, but QPR have made the first move to try and sign him by triggering the release clause in his contract.

West Ham had moved to try and fend off the growing interest in Diame by setting up talks aimed at taking out the release clause from his contract, but as yet no agreement has been reached.

Diame, who has been out of action since picking up a hamstring injury in the defeat by Liverpool earlier this month, is back in light training and is expected to be back playing in 10 days.

Redknapp is now hoping to be given the green light to hold talks with Diame as he sees him as the midfield powerhouse who can lead his side to safety in the second half of the season.

FA contact duo over comments

Roberto Mancini: Written to by the FA

The FA sent letters to City boss Mancini and Rangers counterpart Redknapp requesting their observations on their post-match comments in the wake of their sides' respective matches against Sunderland and West Brom.

Mancini and Redknapp could both find themselves charged by the FA if their words are found to have amounted to improper conduct.

Mancini hit out at referee Kevin Friend following City's 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light, saying: "Maybe the referee ate too much for Christmas."

The Italian was particularly angry with what he felt was a foul on Pablo Zabaleta in the build-up to Adam Johnson's winner, saying it was "impossible two men couldn't see it" in reference to Friend and his assistant.

Redknapp, meanwhile, was furious with what he claimed were two "scandalous" decisions in QPR's 2-1 home defeat to West Brom.

The Rangers boss felt the Baggies' second goal should have been disallowed for a push on goalkeeper Robert Green and bemoaned the decision not to award his side a penalty when Liam Ridgewell appeared to handle the ball late on.

Redknapp said: "I asked the linesman how he didn't see that penalty - it was the most blatant handball you could wish to see but he said it was murky down there in that corner and he couldn't make it out.

"Maybe he should go to Specsavers. I thought they were both awful decisions. Scandalous decisions."

QPR v Liverpool preview

Harry Redknapp: Aiming for his second win against QPR boss since replacing Mark

Goalkeeper Julio Cesar (back), full-back Nedum Onuoha (hamstring) and midfielder Park Ji-sung (knee) are also doubts.

Strikers Andrew Johnson (knee) and Bobby Zamora (hip) are sidelined with long-term injuries.

Liverpool are sweating on the fitness of top scorer Luis Suarez for the trip to Loftus Road.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers says the Uruguayan striker has been hampered by an ankle injury in recent weeks and could be forced out of the clash.

Former QPR youngster Raheem Sterling is pushing for a start.

Redknapp rules out panic buys

Harry Redknapp: Won't sign players 'for the sake of it'

Rangers enter Sunday's clash with Liverpool at Loftus Road six points adrift of safety following successive defeats by Newcastle and West Brom and Redknapp accepts they must strengthen in the transfer window.

Demba Ba, Brede Hangeland and Robbie Keane are among Redknapp's targets with the QPR boss insisting any new signing must bring something to their survival bid.

"If we can get one or two in, we'll give ourselves a chance. That's what I'm looking at," said Redknapp, who denied having made an approach for Hangeland.

"If I can't bring in people who I think can do the job for us, then I won't bother. There's no point signing players for the sake of it.

"I've got to sign people in the right positions who can help us. If we can't do that, we may as well sit tight and see what happens."

The future of Jose Bosingwa remains uncertain after the Portuguese right-back refused to sit on the bench against Fulham on December 15, resulting in h im being dropped altogether and a 130,000 fine.

"We'll have to look at that and see how we're going in January," said Redknapp.

Redknapp added: "I can't look to get rid of anyone - I had to pull in a kid who had been on loan at Yeovil on the bench against West Brom.

"We're certainly not over-loaded. Out of the 25 we have long-term injuries. I won't shift people out unless I get some in."

Redknapp had an immediate impact when he was appointed Tottenham manager in October 2008, lifting a team that had secured only two points after eight games out of the relegation zone within two weeks.

Despite having steadied the ship at Loftus Road, his impact has been less marked with six points in six games leaving the club in a precarious position.

"I didn't expect it to happen quickly here. Spurs and QPR are two different clubs. How Spurs were in that position in the first place I'll never know," Redknapp said.

"There was a long way to go there, only eight games had gone and they had a fantastic squad. Here we'd gone 13 games without a win. It was always going to be much harder.

"No one has a magic wand to start winning games. It's not just going to happen, it's difficult. It's been like I've expected it to be."

Steve Clarke feels West Brom deserved three points from controversial clash with QPR

The Baggies enjoyed a Boxing Day boost at Loftus Road, with victory in the capital keeping them on the fringes of the Premier League's top four.

While Clarke believes his side did enough to warrant all three points, big calls did go their way.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp was left fuming at the match officials come the final whistle, with the decision to award West Brom their second goal when Robert Green appeared to have been impeded by Marc-Antoine Fortune seeing him lose his cool.

Giving his take on the incident, Clarke told Sky Sports: "Marc didn't do a lot wrong, he stood his ground and Rob didn't get around him, made a mistake and it was a goal to us.

"I don't think that should deflect away from the gulf there was between the two teams at stages during the game. The first half was quite even, we got our noses in front, but we looked like the team playing with confidence and QPR are the team that is struggling. We passed the ball well and had some half chances.

"We played good stuff and the start of the second half I thought we were tremendous, we opened the game up and QPR had to come at us. We made a number of chances to make the game 2-0, 3-0, 4-0 and it could have been over before QPR got the goal which made it a little bit more nervous for us towards the end."

Clarke also felt that referee Chris Foy was right to wave away a late penalty shout against Liam Ridgewell, with Redknapp and QPR of the opinion that he had handled inside the box.

Clarke added: "When you are down the bottom, you are going to shout for every decision. Every manager is entitled to shout for it but I think you can't give it, it's impossible for the referee to give that. Liam has jumped, the guy has headed it from about one yard away, it has hit Liam's arm, but it was heading towards his face anyway and it wasn't as if he gained an advantage by using his arm.

"I don't want to talk about controversial decisions , I want to talk about how good my team is and how well we have done at the halfway stage of the season."

While West Brom are delighted to have added another three points to their impressive tally, they did see Goran Popov limp off during the first-half with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Clarke said: "We'll asses all of the injuries tomorrow. We have got people ready to go in. We have got a few players who have waited a long time to get in, and if they get in for a few games then they deserve their chance."

Bonus for QPR as Adel Taarabt is left out of Morocco's Cup of Nations squad

Adel Taarabt: Linked with a move elsewhere in January

Harry Redknapp feared his key midfielder would be called up for the tournament, which begins on 19 January in South Africa.

But Rangers' head of media Ian Taylor the omission on his Twitter page, and when Morocco's official squad sheet was released Taarabt's name was missing.

Taylor wrote: "R's fans - you sang you wanted him to stay at Loftus Road, and it appears he is.

"Whatever language you read it in, Taarabt is NOT in the Morocco squad for the Cup of Nations."

Taarabt has been linked with a move to Milan, and Redknapp's major concern now could be keeping interested clubs at bay during the January transfer window.

Arsenal's little-used striker Marouane Chamakh, meanwhile, has also been left out of a Morocco squad which features Aston Villa's Karim El Ahmadi and Liverpool's Oussama Assaidi.

Harry Redknapp clarifies attack he made on QPR's "overpaid" players

Harry Redknapp: Clarifies attack he made on "overpaid" players

The Rangers manager claimed some players earn 'too much money for what they are', singled out Jose Bosingwa for refusing to sit on the bench against Fulham and suggested the club's summer transfer business had made cash for 'a lot of agents'.

The outburst prompted a Twitter response from owner Tony Fernandes, who argued that 'the value of a player is subjective', and Redknapp offered a more considered appraisal of his squad ahead of the Boxing Day game against West Brom.

Redknapp said: "I wasn't talking about all the players, I was talking about certain players.

"I've got no problem with players who are earning good money, and value for their money, I just felt there are one or two who haven't given this value.

"It's difficult. When Mark brought these players in, massive money wasn't spent here on transfers.

"So what they had to do is take chances. You have to take chances on players, you get them free and you pay them decen t, bigger money and it's all a gamble.

"Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't."

Redknapp praised former manager Mark Hughes, claiming players not pulling their weight caused his sacking, and said he wants to take the club higher.

He added: "It was difficult for Mark, he was a top manager. I've got great respect for him.

"And the chairman here, I don't think I've met any nicer people in football. That's why I'm desperate to do well for the people who run this club.

"One or two of the players haven't pulled their weight, that's why Mark lost his job.

"If you want to go and spend 30 odd million on Aguero you know what you're getting. They're not gambles they're certainties. That's how the game works.

"When you're dealing at the other end of the market you're taking chances, you don't have the money for the fees. I'm going to be taking the chances now, in the transfer window. Hopefully they'll come off but there's no guarant ee.

"Most of the lads here have been absolutely brilliant, top class. I still feel we'll get out of trouble."

Harry 'disturbed' by dispute

Jose Bosingwa: Refused to sit on the bench against Fulham

Redknapp admitted he was "disturbed" by the right-back's refusal to sit on the bench against Fulham.

Bosingwa, a Champions League winner with Chelsea last season, was fined two weeks wages (130,000) the Saturday before last when he stormed out of Loftus Road after being told he would not be in Redknapp's starting XI.

The R's manager launched in to a scathing tirade against the player, and other under-performing members of his squad, after the news of Bosingwa's actions emerged at the weekend, calling them "average" and over-paid.

And Redknapp did not hold back in his criticism of the Portuguese defender on Monday, telling a press conference: "It disturbed me when a player doesn't want to sit on the bench when you are bang in trouble.

"We are all in trouble. The owner and the fans see their team losing every week and suddenly you get someone who doesn't want to sit on the bench.

"He (Bosingwa) said: 'I don't want to sit on the bench. ' He thinks he is too good to sit on the bench. That is what disturbs me in this game.

"I have seen one or two incidents that have disturbed me."

Despite an injury to reserve right-back Nedum Onuoha, Redknapp left Bosingwa out of his squad for Saturday's defeat to Newcastle.

When asked whether Bosingwa would play for him again, Redknapp replied: "I will have to look at it in the future. Let's see how we go."

Redknapp's criticism of Bosingwa has gone down well with most R's fans, who have grown tired of the poor performances of some of the highly-paid players brought in with the aim of helping propel the club to a top-half finish this term.

Redknapp, a manager of over 20 years' experience, will no doubt hope the rant will provoke Bosingwa and some of the other under-performers in to a reaction, starting with Boxing Day's home clash against West Brom.

The Rangers boss defended his decision to hit out publicly at a section of his squad today, and insisted he was relatively happy with the performances of most of his players since taking charge last month.

"I wasn't talking about all the players," said Redknapp, who inherited a team bottom of the table despite a glut of summer signings under his predecessor Mark Hughes.

"I have no problem with players earning good money if they give good value for their money and I just feel that one or two haven't.

"You don't have to be a mind reader to see that we haven't had good value for money. It's pretty obvious.

"Mark is a top manager. But one or two of the players haven't pulled their weight. That's why Mark lost his job."

The next five weeks will be decisive in Redknapp's quest to keep QPR in the Premier League.

The west London club face a tough run of fixtures and the R's boss must work sensibly in the transfer market.

Despite an upturn in form since he took charge, Redknapp's team are still five points adrift of sa fety as the season approaches the half way point.

The 65-year-old believes he can keep the team up, but he underlined just how big a task lies ahead for him if he is to stop QPR slipping in to the npower Championship.

"We really have to show top-six form," Redknapp said.

"We will need as near to 40 points as possible.

"That is a point and a half a game.

"It's going to be tough but it can happen. You can go on a run and do that."

QPR midfielder Adel Taarabt says that his agent has spoken to AC Milan

Adel Taarabt: QPR playmaker was linked with a move to PSG last year

QPR's Moroccan playmaker admits that rumoured exits and arrivals at the San Siro would have an effect on whether he would make a move to the Italian giants.

"Me to AC Milan? My agent speaks with (AC Milan CEO, Adriano) Galliani, but my future depends on Robinho and Pastore," Taarabt told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Milan aren't going through a glorious period now, and they're no longer a part of the top clubs, but making it big with the Rossoneri could open the door to huge clubs like Real Madrid or Barcelona."

Taarabt was close to moving to Paris St-Germain in 2011, but he is adamant that a move to the French side is not on the cards.

"Leonardo preferred Pastore and then spoke ill of me. As long as he stay there I won't ever go to Paris, even if I often hear the president Nasser Al Khelaifi."

However a move elsewhere in the Premier League is something the 23-year-old would consider.

"I'd leave London only for Manchester Unite d, the club of my dreams, where there is no number 10.

"For Mr Ferguson I'd also stay silent on the bench and I would work hard."

Salomon Kalou is not looking for a way out of Lille, says his representative

Salomon Kalou: Has struggled to produce his best since moving to France

The Ivory Coast international has struggled to settle in France since linking up with Lille as a free agent over the summer and has been linked with a return to England, with QPR, Everton and West Ham all reportedly interested.

The former Chelsea forward has netted just three times in 18 appearances this season and reports have suggested that he has been made available for transfer ahead of the January transfer window.

Lille are said to be willing to cash in on Kalou as they attempt to get their finances in order and improve performances on the field.

Kalou is, however, keen to honour the contract he signed on his arrival, with his agent attempting to play down reports that the 27-year-old could soon be on his way back to the Premier League.

"We are calm," said Kalou's brother Bonnaventure, who also acts as his representative.

"Salomon knows he has to work hard to reach his true level and show what he is capable of doing when he is in the best shape mentally."

Bosingwa handed fine by QPR

Jose Bosingwa: Stormed out last weekend

It is understood that manager Harry Redknapp imposed the maximum punishment possible on Bosingwa after taking exception to the full-back's reaction to being dropped for last Saturday's 2-1 win over Fulham.

Bosingwa, who joined Rangers from Chelsea this summer on a contract reportedly worth 50,000 a week, was said to have stormed out of Loftus Road after learning of his axing.

The 30-year-old has also been left out of the squad for the game at Newcastle.

It had been claimed that was the result of injury but it could well be an additional punishment for his breach of discipline.

Shola Ameobi's late strike gave Newcastle a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers QPR

Shola Ameobi celebrates late winner with James Perch

A first win of the season lifted the R's off the bottom last week, but struggling Newcastle were also in desperate need of three points and an 81st minute strike from substitute Ameobi rewarded their dogged display at a damp St James' Park.

The hosts went in search of an early opener, but Papiss Cisse could not direct his back-post header on goal and he then failed to find strike partner Demba Ba with a wayward cross.

Magpies winger Jonas Gutierrez was similarily wasteful when he overhit his centre from a promising position, while the R's gave a glimpse of their threat as Adel Taarabt's dangerous ball flew across the face.

Newcastle were offering little attacking menace, despite decent spells of possession, and QPR's resolute defender Ryan Nelsen easily dealt with any hopeful balls into the box.

Ba ballooned a free-kick hopelessly over the bar as the Magpies laboured on the increasingly sodden surface, but James Perch did raise th e pulse of the home faithful with a shot narrowly wide.

Following a quiet first-half, R's striker Djibril Cisse nearly made his mark moments after the restart as Tim Krul pushed his low drive into the side-netting.

His namesake then went close at the other end as Papiss nodded over at the back post, while Vurnon Anita's dangerous low free-kick was pushed away by Rob Green.

The Magpies were mounting a sustained assault on goal, but substitute Ameobi made a mess of a header before Ba nodded weakly at Green.

Ameobi was far more assured shortly afterwards as he raced onto Perch's pass and curled an inch perfect shot into the far corner.

The R's back-line was almost breached again minutes later when a low drive from Sylvain Marveaux was pushed away by the sprawling Green.

Taarabt was handed the chance to give Rangers a last-gasp reprieve with a free-kick in a dangerous position, but his looping effort was held by Krul.

Boss Harry Redknapp launches scathing attack on wages at QPR

Harry Redknapp: Players earning too much

The former Tottenham manager launched a scathing attack on some of the players he inherited from Mark Hughes and hinted that he intends to sell Jose Bosingwa in January.

Redknapp suffered his first defeat as Rangers boss with their defeat at St James' Park.

Asked about his plans for the January transfer window, Redknapp said: "I don't want to spend their (the club's) money, to be honest with you.

"There are a lot of players at this club who earn far too much money for what they are; far, far, far too much money for their ability and what they give to the club.

"I don't really want to see the owners have their pants taken down like they have in the past. There's a lot of agents made money out of them.

"I fined a player last week and he was earning more than any player earned at Tottenham.

"You shouldn't be paying massive wages when you've got a stadium that holds 18,000 people.

"This club (Newcastle) holds 52,00 0 and most of their players will be nowhere near some of the wages some of the players are earning here."

Redknapp also confirmed that full-back Bosingwa had been fined a fortnight's wages after refusing to sit on the bench for last weekend's 2-1 victory over Fulham.

He said: "He didn't want to be on the bench and didn't want to be a substitute, so he went home.

"He has been fined two weeks' wages, 130,000. Not too bad for two weeks, decent isn't it? Not too bad for playing on a Saturday, it's okay."

Asked how he might handle a player like that, Redknapp said: "We'll find out in January."

Redknapp played down the likelihood of signing Newcastle striker Demba Ba, who has a 7m-release clause in his United contract.

Redknapp said: "We've not got 7m to spend on a player, I'd have thought."

Lille coach Rudi Garcia has no plans to let Salomon Kalou leave

Salomon Kalou: Staying at Lille in January, says Garcia

Kalou joined the Ligue 1 side from Chelsea on a free transfer in the summer and is under contract there until 2016.

But the Ivory Coast frontman has reportedly struggled to settle at the French club, scoring just three goals in 17 appearances.

Speculation has surfaced suggesting he could return to the Premier League in January, with new QPR boss Harry Redknapp thought to be keen, while Everton and West Ham have also been linked.

However, Garcia insists he has no desire to part with the 27-year-old next month but wants the striker to be more decisive in his play.

He told L'Equipe: "It was big buzz. I want to keep everyone and if we could hire an additional forward it would be better.

"I talked to Salomon and I told him what I just told you.

"He is a man of great value who has huge potential. But indeed we expect him to be more decisive."

QPR boss Harry Redknapp admits he would like to sign Nicolas Anelka

The 33-year-old striker left west London rivals Chelsea to join Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua almost a year ago.

But Anelka looks set to end his time in Far East following a pay dispute, and Redknapp has confirmed his interest in bringing him to Loftus Road.

"He is a player that is of interest to anybody," said Redknapp as he prepares for QPR's trip to Newcastle. "I think he is finishing in China so he is available.

"It is what you can do, whether you can afford these players, what they are looking for, whether they are reasonable, whether you can deal with them and most importantly whether you think they can do the job you want.

"He is a top player so he is a player we would be interested in, but whether we could afford to get anywhere near I him I am not sure.

"It depends, as I say, just how expensive the whole package comes to. If it is within reason, he is a player that could certainly improve your team. There is no doubt a bout it."

QPR confirm three of the club's coaching staff have left Loftus Road.

Harry Redknapp: Changing his staff

Technical director Mike Rigg, who joined from Manchester City last season to renew his partnership with former Rangers boss Mark Hughes, has been dismissed.

Also departing are assistant manager Mark Bowen and first-team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki, who have long been part of predecessor Hughes' coaching set-up.

Redknapp also verified goalkeeping coach Kevin Hitchcock and head of coaching Glyn Hodges have stayed with Rangers.

Rigg leaves QPR role

Loftus Road: Mike Rigg has departed

Rigg joined the Premier League strugglers from Manchester City last season to renew his partnership with then Rangers boss Mark Hughes.

But following Harry Redknapp's appointment as Hughes' successor last month the club have opted for a further change.

They confirmed Rigg's departure in a brief statement on their website that said: "Queens Park Rangers Football Club can confirm that it has been agreed that Mike Rigg will leave his position at Loftus Road."

Zamora eyes January return

Bobby Zamora: Getting closer to return

The 31-year-old striker has not featured for the west Londoners since a 1-0 defeat at Stoke in November due to a hip injury.

Zamora underwent surgery on the problem and had been expected to be out until the end of February, although he is progressing well and could be back a month earlier than planned.

"I'd like to think I'll be back available in the next four or five weeks," he told the club's official website.

"I had an operation three weeks ago and am now working on getting fit. My fingers are crossed for a smooth recovery."

LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane not planning a loan move to the Premier League

Robbie Keane: Not looking to sign up with a Premier League club on loan

The Los Angeles Galaxy striker spent time with Aston Villa last winter and has reportedly been targeted by a number of English clubs, including Queens Park Rangers, for a short-term deal from January.

The Republic of Ireland international says he has no plans to sign up with anyone as he wants to be in peak condition for next spring, when the 2013 MLS season kicks off and there are a couple of crucial World Cup qualifiers.

"I am going to rest up and get ready for next season with the Galaxy. I haven't even thought about taking up with any other teams, I have a few little niggles that I have to sort out before I even contemplate making any decisions," Keane, currently on a break back home in Dublin, told the Evening Herald.

"There has been a lot of speculation and a few clubs are interested but it wouldn't be right for me to go anywhere if I wasn't 100 per cent fit and ready.

"I don't have any major problems, just an Achilles injury , but if that isn't right, I won't be going anywhere.

"2013 is going to be a big year for Ireland in March - two very important games.

"They will dictate where the team will go so we look forward to it and hopefully it'll be a lucky year for us."

Giovanni Trapattoni's men, currently third in Group C, travel to Stockholm on 22nd March before entertaining Austria at the Aviva Stadium four days later.

"Sweden and Austria are the two teams that are going to be around us," said Keane.

"I didn't see the game but I heard Sweden were very good against England and I think they are similar to us, not too many differences.

"When you look at Germany, it's fair to say, they will win the group and it's up to us to finish second as we always do and go into a play-off.

"We are still in with a shout and these two games are make or break but we have as much chance as anyone else."

Fernandes feared Redknapp loss

Tony Fernandes: Redknapp is a special manager

The Welshman was sacked last month after the west Londoners failed to win any of their opening 12 league matches, with a 3-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Southampton proving the final straw.

Redknapp was quickly installed as Hughes' successor, with the R's boss revealing he had been just hours away from taking control of the Ukraine national team.

That option appears to have forced Fernandes' hand, with the QPR chairman revealing he could not risk losing out on the former Tottenham boss.

"Harry is a special manager," he told the club's official website.

"If he wasn't available, I would probably have persevered with Mark, but Harry is a fantastic manager.

"I've known him for years going back to when he was at West Ham. Harry being available swung it for us."

He added: "We're all in this together. No shirking. Let's see what Harry and the boys do.

"It's up to the 11 guys on the pitch to make it happen for us now.

"If we can pick up a couple of more wins before the new year, we're back to where we were this time last year.

"Coming off a win and three draws, there's a bit of renewed confidence about the place now."

QPR are unbeaten in four matches since Redknapp's arrival and picked up their first league win of the season against Fulham on Saturday.

The Hoops are, though, five points adrift of safety and remain in danger of going down.

There had been suggestions that relegation to the npower Championship could see Fernandes leave Loftus Road - something he has been quick to deny.

"Come what may, in May, we'll still be here," he said. "I'm firmly committed to the club. I'm not someone who's going to run away from things.

"There are still a lot of good things happening. The training ground is well on track and the stadium plans are progressing. We're hopeful of getting category two status in the Academy.

"There's no change to our off-t he-field strategy. There are lots of good things going on."

He added: "We inherited a club that needed a hell of a lot of work and we'll continue to progress with our short, medium and long term goals.

"I'm a strong character who has been through a hell of a lot in life. The aviation business isn't for those with a weak heart.

"But I've got to say, the run of results - before Harry came in - really affected me. It's been really tough.

"I'm the leader and it's a great shame that after so much honest effort, we are where we are in the table."

Harry: Taarabt has bright future

Adel Taarabt: Star of the show in win over Fulham

The 23-year-old was the Hoops' standout player on Saturday as they won their first league game of the season at the 17th time of asking.

Taarabt netted both of QPR's goals in the 2-1 defeat of west London neighbours Fulham as manager Redknapp got the desired response from the "heart-to-heart chat" he had with the playmaker last Monday.

Redknapp, who sold the Morocco international to QPR when Tottenham manager, believes Saturday's performance is just the start for the midfielder, who he was quick to compare to a man he managed at West Ham.

"He can be a top, top player," Redknapp said. "He's got ability like not many people you've ever seen in your life.

"He's like Di Canio, who I thought was a fantastic player, one of the all-time greats at West Ham. This boy is the same.

"He can do things that nobody else can do. No one can do what he can do. He's amazing.

"He nutmegs people and he goes past two or three and they're hanging o n to him but they can't get the ball off him.

"It's amazing, but we always felt that when he was at Tottenham.

"When I let him go, he used to come back and I'd say to him 'you're making me look a fool, Adel! I keep seeing you on telly, you're worth 20million, I sold you too cheap! What are you doing? Are you still having a laugh with me?'.

"But I never wanted to let him go at Tottenham, I was scared to let him go. I always felt he had a value even if he wasn't starting.

"He could still come off the bench and turn a game for you, but it was hard for him to get in the team back then and in the end [chairman] Daniel [Levy] said 'look, if he's not going to play, we might as well sell him and get a big sell-on fee' and that's what the club did.

"He wasn't a player I ever wanted to release. And he's grown up a bit now, he's better than he was. He was a complete fruitcake at Tottenham."

Taarabt's form will be key if QPR are going to beat th e odds and secure survival, with the side currently five points adrift of safety.

"It's going to be hard," Redknapp said. "We've kept ourselves in there, that's all.

"We've got that monkey of our back with that win and we've given ourselves half a chance.

"We've been excellent in all the games [since I arrived]. We should have beat Villa here really, and drawing at Wigan and Sunderland away has given us six points from four games. That's the average that we'll have to get.

"You need two wins from every four games or one win and three draws. That would keep us up at the end of the season."

Tottenham won't let Scott Parker and Michael Dawson join QPR in January

Scott Parker: Tottenham midfielder close to fitness and will not be allowed to j

Dawson rejected a move to QPR in the summer, but the Premier League strugglers have been tipped to revive their interest next month, with the centre-half not a regular under Villas-Boas.

Parker, meanwhile, has yet to play for Spurs this season due to an Achilles injury and faces a fight to force his way back into the centre of midfield.

However, Villas-Boas does not want to lose either player in the New Year, despite admitting that he expects Redknapp to be interested in signing members of Spurs' squad.

"At the moment it's very unfair on me to try to say what QPR's decision-making is in the transfer window," said Villas-Boas.

"Obviously Harry knows these players very well and if he has to add to his squad he will certainly look to our players but we are not looking to sell those two, or loan them.

"Scott has been gaining fitness. I think Scott will be playing regularly here. For the player that he is, I think he has to.

"He has to compete, like Dembele and Sandro have to, but we recognise the importance of the player and we rate him very highly. He offers us more possibilities.

"He has experience and leadership qualities. Scott is key to the team. We lost first Mousa to injury, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Kaboul and Scott, and we've been very patient.

"Younes still has to recover from injury and get match fitness, so we need cover and Jan Vertonghen has been playing at left-back so we are not excessive in terms of numbers. But we are not looking for Dawson to go."

Traore looks to build on win

Armand Traore: Delighted with win

The Rs have endured a miserable start to the campaign, with chairman Tony Fernandes admitting in the build-up that it has been "nothing short of a disaster".

Harry Redknapp's side went some way to making amends yesterday, though, as Adel Taarabt inspired QPR to victory against west London rivals Fulham at Loftus Road.

The Morocco international's brace secured a 2-1 win that moves the Hoops off the bottom of the table, and left-back Traore knows the result has to act as a catalyst.

"It was definitely a relief to get that win," he said.

"After coming so close in a lot of the games, I think it was a big relief for the players, for the fans and for the club.

"I think last week at Wigan we did well. We went 2-1 up and unfortunately they scored one back.

"There are a few I can think of off the top of my head where we came close, but it was a good all-round performance.

"I still think it is going to be really hard and I think that before this game we were unbeaten in three.

"It was really important to get that win, like Harry said, so I think now we can start our season."

Yesterday's victory cuts the gap on 17th place to five points and continues Redknapp's fine start to life at the club.

QPR are unbeaten since he succeeded Mark Hughes at the helm, with three draws before yesterday's win against Fulham.

"He is very good with the players," Traore said of Redknapp. "He likes to tell the players their strengths.

"Obviously that brings confidence to the players. He is a very good motivator as well as a good coach.

"He is a good guy to coach QPR and I feel I have improved since he came in.

"I always try and improve anyway regardless of the manager, but I am trying to improve every game."

As good as QPR were yesterday, opponents Fulham never really looked a threat at Loftus Road.

Mladen Petric's late goal ensured a nervy ending but a level ler would have been harsh on the hosts, with Aaron Hughes conceding the Cottagers let themselves down.

"It is disappointing," the defender told Press Association Sport. "Any loss is disappointing, especially a derby loss.

"It was a hard-fought game on Monday night against Newcastle and a hard-fought game against QPR. It is just a shame we couldn't come out the right side of it.

"We knew they were going to be up for it. They are fighting for their lives down there, so we knew from the off it would be like that.

"Take away everything else, the qualities they have and all the other things, the first thing they were going to have was going to be a lot of fight.

"They showed that and we got away with a couple of things in the first half. We got ourselves back in the game a little bit, we're just disappointed with the goals we conceded.

"After a big performance on Monday night, we sort of let ourselves down. We came up a little bit short."

Saturday's loss was compounded by an injury to right-back Sascha Riether.

The German has impressed since arriving at Fulham in the summer but limped off at half-time, taking to Twitter overnight to reveal the nature of his injury.

"Sorry to all the fulham Fans for such a disappointing Game," Riether said. "Meeting with the German Doc in munich because of a hamstring injury."

Harry Redknapp praised Adel Taarabt after his brace sunk rivals Fulham

Taarabt was inspirational for most of the game and he helped Rangers to a 2-1 success at Loftus Road to move off the foot of the table.

And Redknapp enthused about his star player's match-winning contribution, which gave Rangers a huge lift at the final whistle.

He told Sky Sports: "He was amazing. I changed it today. I just felt we might be a little short and a little open, but I really wanted to get him in that position where he played today - off the front - where he can play and cause damage inbetween the lines and he did that today.

"Everytime he picked the ball up he did the most amazing things. It was one of the all-time great performances I felt. Everything he did today was top class and the goals were the icing on the cake.

"Adel has got the talent and the ability to be as good as he wants to be."

It was the first win under Redknapp and the club's first league victory since they beat Stoke on May 6 and he felt it was a necessity to end the winless run before they were cut adrift.

"Yeah it did (mean so much) and it was a fantastic performance today," he said. "We've played well in all our games. We had three draws and now we got our first win, but it was well deserved.

"We were the better team, I thought we dominated although the last four minutes were a bit hectic, which they were bound to be.

"It would have been a gross injustice had we hadn't won the game today."

Victory moved Rangers onto 10 points from 17 games, which keeps Redknapp's team in touch with the teams above them.

"It's going to be hard, we all know that," he added.

"No one is kidding ourselves, it's going to be tough, but if we work as hard as we did today and play with the same ability and enthusiasm then we can pick up points for sure."

Redknapp: Time to end drought

Harry Redknapp: Looking to get the best out of his players

Much had been expected from the R's this season, with a number of high-profile names brought in to much fanfare during the summer.

Those acquisitions have not had the desired effect, though, and last weekend's draw at Wigan saw their winless start to the season stretch to 16 matches, breaking the Premier League record in the process.

However, having picked up three draws since succeeding Mark Hughes at the helm, Redknapp is hopeful of that first elusive win against Fulham on Saturday.

"We've got what we've got," he said. "This is the team I have been given.

"That is what I have got to work with and I am just concerned about getting the best out of them.

"I can't look and see where Mark was with them. It is what I can try and do with the same group.

"If I can get the best out of them, that's all I can do. If, at the end of the day, it isn't good enough, I can't do anymore.

"But, at the moment, I am getting the best out of what they can give me and I feel we are close to getting that first win. Hopefully it will come tomorrow.

"It won't be easy as Fulham have done well. They are a tough team to beat, they've got some quality.

"It will be a difficult game but we're at home, it's a London derby. We've got to give everything we've got.

"We've got to give blood, sweat and tears tomorrow to try and get that win."

Redknapp will be unable to call upon Park Ji-sung against the Cottagers having sustained a knee injury that will keep him out for a few weeks, but goalkeeper Julio Cesar is back in contention after a groin complaint.

The QPR manager admits he has already made his mind up on whether to recall the Brazilian or stick with Robert Green - a decision he refused to divulge, but one he knows will not go down well with all.

"It is a tough choice," Redknapp said. "They are two good goalkeepers so we're lucky to have such good keepers here.

"Whoever doesn't play is going to be disappointed. That's football.

"What can you do you? You can't please everybody. You've got to make a choice.

"Whoever doesn't get chosen will be upset and unhappy with me, but that is how football is."

Should Green miss out, the England international may well be looking for a move to pastures new in January.

Reports suggest several players could leave Loftus Road when the transfer window reopens, leading Redknapp to hit out at any of those looking to jump ship.

"I'm not looking to get rid of anyone at the moment," Redknapp said. "We need all hands on deck. We can't afford to be thinking about that.

"They've just got to get on and do well for QPR. That's the key.

"If they all play to their potential, then we won't have a problem. But they've got to play to what they are capable of doing, they can't be thinking about their next move or any other move.

"This is where they are, this is the club they belong to."

That desire to keep the squad intact has seen Redknapp ask Morocco's Adel Taarabt to miss the upcoming African Nations Cup to stay and help fight with QPR.

"I don't know whether they have to go or whether they don't," said Redknapp, who also faces losing Mali's Samba Diakite. "I am not sure what the rules are.

"Of course I'd rather Adel didn't go but I don't know where you stand on that. I'll have to find out.

"I told him we need him here if possible. We need all the players here and he is a good player so we would really like to keep him here."

Jol: Redknapp can transform R's

Martin Jol: Surprised at QPR's poor season so far

The Cottagers travel a couple of miles up the road on Saturday afternoon for a west London derby with more riding on it than most.

QPR have yet to secure a Premier League victory this season, with their 16-match winless streak an all-time Premier League record.

That abysmal start leaves QPR bottom of the table but Jol believes anything is possible with Redknapp at the helm, highlighting an unlikely turnaround he oversaw when at the helm of RKC Waalwijk.

"At my second club they had three points at the end of November," the Dutchman said.

"It was the first time in history that a club had that amount of points and we still managed to stay in the league so that was good.

"The year after we were fourth with two other clubs so I think Harry can do a similar job.

"Harry has proved in the past that he is a very good manager, a fantastic manager, but it is a big challenge.

"I had the same in Holland so you can never write clubs off. I think they have got the quality.

"Do they have the mentality? I think it is something which is written in the stars but I think Harry is capable of coming up with a few very good results and then for them hopefully keep them up."

There was much expectation around Loftus Road this summer, with the club bringing in a host of big names to avoid a similar relegation scrap to the one they endured last season.

Asked if he had been surprised the failure so far at QPR, Jol said: "Yeah, I really thought with the players they got in, with the money they spent (they would kick on).

"Of course we were involved as well. Our players (Bobby Zamora and Andrew Johnson) went over there and I think they did a lot to get these players. It wasn't just seven or eight it was at least 12, 13 or 14 players.

"If you change your whole squad around you feel you are improving all the time and they still probably got less points than they had last year so of cou rse I am surprised."

While it might be all the doom and gloom at their west London rivals, Jol will not be taking them for granted.

The Fulham boss was quick to highlight the fine line between success and failure in the Premier League epitomised by QPR's seven draws to date.

"Harry has been there for a couple of weeks now and they felt they need a response all the time," Jol said.

"They need a response now, we are aware of that. But they were quite close all the time even before Harry was there.

"They have seven draws so they could have had wins because I saw a couple of games where they were very unlucky with red cards.

"Not only once but twice or three times so they are in a difficult situation, but I feel there is a lot of games to go.

"You can get a lot of points on the board so you can never write them off."

Fernandes: Season a 'disaster'

Tony Fernandes: Not gone to plan so far this season

Saturday's 2-2 draw at Wigan saw the west Londoners set an unwanted Premier League record for the longest winless start to the season.

QPR have gone 16 games without a victory and will be hoping to break their duck when neighbours Fulham come to Loftus Road on Saturday.

Fernandes will be at the match and told fans on Tuesday to remain upbeat.

He said on Twitter: "Holiday today in malaysia. Went early xmas shopping. But all I want is 3 points. Hehehehe.

"Its been nothing short of a disaster. Its not where we are. But boy we put so much effort into this. Good honest effort.

"Keep your spirits up. Laughing smiling and being positive helps. Won't leave any stone unturned to try fix this. tough as it is. Hopefully santa gives us some early presents."

Angry response to UEFA verdict

Danny Rose: Victim of racist chanting in Serbia

Serbia have been fined 80,000 euros (65,000) and ordered to play a match behind closed doors following racist chanting and violence towards England's Under-21 players.

FA general secretary Alex Horne said the sanctions did not send a "strong enough message" about racism, and that the governing body will appeal against two-match and one-match bans for Steven Caulker and Tom Ince respectively.

Rio and Anton Ferdinand also criticised the sanctions on Twitter contrasting it with a 100,000 euro and one-match ban handed to former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner for displaying a betting firm's logo on his underpants during Euro 2012.

UEFA's control and disciplinary body also banned four Serbian players and two coaches for varying terms after ugly scenes marred the end of the European Championship play-off in Krusevac in October.

Horne said: "We are disappointed with the sanctions levied by UEFA with regards to the racist behaviour displayed towa rds England's players.

"Let's be clear, racism is unacceptable in any form, and should play no part in football. The scenes were deplorable and we do not believe the sanction sends a strong enough message."

Anton Ferdinand tweeted: "Wow UEFA ain't serious with their punishment... So showin a sponsor is worst than racism and fighting!"

His brother Rio added: "Uefa are not serious at all on racism. Fines do not work at all. They have zero impact on federations/clubs/fans/players fact.

"Uefa need to talk to this generation.....they don't seem to be up to date on this issue?? Harsh punishments needed as a deterrent simple."

Sports minister Hugh Robertson, who had written to UEFA president Michel Platini demanding tough action for the racist abuse, also expressed his disappointment.

Robertson said: "I am disappointed in the punishment that has been handed to the Serbian FA given the widespread racist abuse that England's Under-21 team suf fered that night. Racism is completely unacceptable and we need tough sanctions to help combat it."

The FA had reported the racist abuse to UEFA plus a number of other incidents.

Full-back Danny Rose, who was dismissed after the final whistle for kicking the ball away in anger, complained he had been subjected to monkey chants throughout the match and as he left the pitch.

Serbian FA secretary general Zoran Lakovic appeared to suggest that the UEFA official prosecuting the charges had also demanded tougher action.

Lakovic said in a statement: "If we take into account what the drastic proposed penalty by the disciplinary inspector Jean-Samuel Leube we have not been hit so hard.

"I believe that this is a final warning to all of us who work in Serbian football, including coaches and players and fans, because for even the smallest mistake UEFA can now impose the most rigorous punishment."

Lord Herman Ouseley, chairman of Kick It Out, con demned the sanction as "a paltry slap on the wrist", adding: "Again we haven't seen decisive action from UEFA."

Piara Powar, executive director of European anti-discrimination body FARE, said UEFA had failed to display the necessary leadership.

Powar said: "We are disappointed in the totality of the sanction handed out to the Serbian FA. The original offences warranted a more severe collective punishment than a ban on spectators for one match.

"This is a moment in which leadership to challenge discrimination is needed from all authorities. This sanction falls short of that objective.

In relation to Ince and Caulker's bans, the FA said they were surprised at the action and that the players had merely protected themselves.

Horne added: "It is The FA's vehement belief that its players and staff acted correctly in the face of provocation, including racist abuse and missiles being thrown.

"We are therefore surprised to see that two of our players have been given suspensions. We shall await UEFA's reasoning but it is our intention, at this stage, to support our players and appeal these decisions."

England Under-21 head coach Stuart Pearce added: "I am concerned to see our players suspended by UEFA and we will continue to support them. I maintain that our players played no part in the aggression. From what I witnessed our players and staff were forced to protect themselves in the violent scenes that followed the game."

Serbia fitness coach Andreja Milunovic and assistant coach Predrag Katic were both banned for two years, part of the ban being suspended for three years in each case.

Four Serbia players were also banned - Goran Causic for four matches, Ognjen Mudrinski and Filip Malbasic for three and Nikola Ninkovic for two.

Serbia and the FA have three days in which to lodge an appeal - while UEFA themselves can also appeal against the control and disciplinary body if they too thin k the independent commission have been too lenient.

Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell aims to keep QPR's poor run going

Steve Sidwell: Looking to keep Fulham's impressive record against QPR going

The West London rivals meet at Craven Cottage this Saturday with the Hoops bottom of the Premier League and still searching for the first win of the league campaign.

Sidwell's fourth goal of the season helped Fulham return to winning ways when they beat Newcastle at Craven Cottage on Monday night, ending a run of seven games without a victory.

History is in Fulham's favour, with the Cottagers having not lost to QPR since May 1983 and Sidwell is determined for that record to continue.

"They have not won a game all season and we do not want it to be against us," declared the midfielder.

"We cannot let the occasion get to us. Before the Newcastle game, we knew it was massive. We had to get three points."

QPR boss Harry Redknapp open to playing DJ Campbell after current loan spell

DJ Campbell: Impressive form on loan may yet see him return to the QPR side

The striker has impressed on loan at Ipswich Town, but that deal expires at the end of December.

Campbell's eight goals in 12 appearances have impressed Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy, who is keen make the striker's move a permanent one.

But QPR's perilous situation, without a win and bottom of the Premier League, means that Redknapp could turn to the 31-year-old.

Signed from Blackpool in the summer of 2011, Campbell made 12 appearances in a first season at QPR that was blighted by metatarsal and hamstring injuries.

Ignored by Mark Hughes at the start of the current campaign, Campbell was loaned to Portman Road in October where his form has registered with Hughes' successor.

"DJ's out on loan at the moment," said Redknapp. "Of course, we'll see how he goes, and if he works hard and continues to score, then you never know."

QPR playmaker Adel Taarabt has hinted he will go to the Africa Cup of Nations

Adel Taarabt: Reluctant to turn his back on his country

With QPR languishing at the foot of the Premier League table and still in search of their first victory of the season, Harry Redknapp had been hoping to keep key men at his disposal in the New Year.

Taarabt is considered to be crucial to the club's bid to retain to their top-flight status, with the enigmatic forward possessing match-winning ability.

He will, however, miss a number of important fixtures if he links up with Morocco to compete for the biggest prize in African football.

Taarabt admits he has a tough call to make, with a big decision set to leave one group of supporters and coaches frustrated.

He said: "It's a difficult decision because the manager asked if I could stay.

"I would love to but it's my country so if I say 'No', everybody at home will think I don't want to play - so I think I will go.

"I go to Morocco every summer. If they don't do well, the fans will have a go at me and I don't want that."

Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy hopes to sign DJ Campbell permanently from QPR

DJ Campbell: Impressed during his loan spell at Ipswich Town

Campbell has impressed during his loan stint at Portman Road netting eight goals in 12 appearances for Town.

The 31-year-old is due back at QPR next month, but he is unsure of his long-term future at the Premier League club.

McCarthy believes Ipswich would be Campbell's first choice if he was to leave QPR, but he is aware his form at Portman Road could increase competition for his services.

"They [other clubs] will have all noticed DJ scoring goals here but there is nothing we can do about that," McCarthy told the club's official website.

"All we can do is try and do a deal with him. He wants to stay long term at a club and I think this club would be his first choice, with things starting to go better.

"But there are a lot of mitigating circumstances that can change that situation. Let's just wait and see."

James McCarthy scored twice for Wigan to deny QPR a first win of the season

James McCarthy: Produced two fine finishes to leave Harry Redknapp and QPR waiti

Djibril Cisse briefly looked to have won it for Harry Redknapp's side but McCarthy popped up with his second of the game minutes later to deny QPR and leave them deep in the mire.

McCarthy had opened the scoring in the first half with a fine volley but Ryan Nelsen equalised for the visitors with a header soon after.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez had major defensive worries going into the game as his first-choice back-three were all unavailable through a combination of injury and suspensions.

That showed in a nervy opening as the Hoops, with Stephane Mbia and Samba Diakite prominent in midfield, looked the more purposeful of the sides without troubling Ali Al Habsi in the Latics goal.

But it was Wigan that took the lead in fine style inside 20 minutes when McCarthy volleyed low into Robert Green's net after Jamie Mackie had failed to effectively clear a corner from the left.

Redknapp's apparent decision to favour perspiration o ver inspiration in leaving so many of his flair players on the bench looked to have backfired.

But they were back on level terms just seven minutes later thanks to their wholehearted captain when Nelsen rose to head powerfully home at the near post from Adel Taarabt's corner.

Wigan came out a much-improved team after the interval as they completely dominated the early stages of the second half with QPR retreating into their shell.

David Jones forced Green into a smart save with a volley and then the former England goalkeeper was beaten by Jordi Gomez only for the ball to come back off the crossbar.

But when Adrian Lopez misplaced a pass in defence, Shaun Wright-Phillips picked out Cisse on the edge of the box who guided the ball left-footed into the corner to punish Wigan on the break.

There was no happy ending for the Premier League bottom club though and when Jean Beausejour measured his cross to find McCarthy, the Irishman slotted past G reen to earn a point for his team.

Harry Redknapp says QPR need a Premier League win after draw with Wigan

QPR were held to a 2-2 draw by the Latics at the DW Stadium as goals from Ryan Nelsen and Djibril Cisse were cancelled out by a James McCarthy double for the home side.

Redknapp has now seen his side collect three points from as many games since he became manager, and he knows they have to push on quickly to get out of trouble.

"We need wins," Redknapp, whose QPR side are now eight points adrift of safety, told Sky Sports.

"We played at home to Villa and I felt that was a game we should have won. We got a point at Sunderland and a point today, so that's three games and we haven't lost yet, but we need that win.

"We're at home next week (against Fulham) and we've got to try and get it then. If we can get a win it will turn the whole thing around."

Redknapp says there have been positives to take from the games so far and paid tribute to goalkeeper Robert Green, as well as Nelsen and Clint Hill.

"I've been pleased with the way they 've worked," he said. "They've given a lot of effort and I thought the two centre-halves today were fantastic. The keeper, Rob Green, was excellent as well.

"There were some positives and I think we put a shift in."

Redknapp refused to confirm his plans for January but admitted it would depend on whether QPR had been cut adrift at the bottom of the table.

He said: "I know where I'd like to improve but it's difficult for me to say because we've got players here at the moment.

"We will see what happens in the window. If we are still in there, and please God we are, then we will have a look at it and see if we can get one or two in who could give us a push."

Green shocked by Cesar signing

Rob Green: Given his chance under Harry Redknapp

The 32-year-old England stopper made the switch from West Ham in July having helped the Hammers win promotion back to the Premier League.

However, QPR's decision to sign Brazilian Cesar from Inter Milan a month later came as a huge shock to Green, who soon found himself playing a bit part under manager Mark Hughes.

"I came to QPR looking for a new challenge after six years at West Ham, a wonderful time capped off by promotion at Wembley," Green told the Mail on Sunday.

"Kevin Hitchcock, the goalkeeping coach at QPR, is an old mate and I came to work for him on the understanding that I was first choice.

"If he'd said to me we're also going to sign someone who's won Serie A five times and the Champions League and is one of the biggest names in South American football, I would have thought twice before signing.

"I'd read rumours in the press about Julio coming, but when I asked officials at the club they dismissed it as paper talk and said he wasn't going to sign."

Green admitted the three months that followed Cesar's arrival were among the hardest of his career.

"Now that the Brazilian had joined the club I needed to know where I stood," he said.

"I asked Mark Hughes. He told me Julio was going to play, that I'd done nothing wrong and that he wanted two top keepers competing for the position.

"I replied, 'Well, if he's going straight into the first team he's not really competing, is he? Where does that leave me?"'

"Hughes replied, 'You're free to leave whenever you want'. It wasn't quite what I wanted to hear."

Hughes' dismissal last month, and an injury to Cesar, have finally allowed Green a chance to show what he can do between the posts.

And the goalkeeper is hoping he can make an impression on new boss Harry Redknapp.

"I'm in the jersey now and it's up to me to play well enough to keep it," he said.

"I believe Harry when he says it's a fa ir fight on form alone so we'll see how it all turns out."

QPR's Julio Cesar says players must accept blame for Mark Hughes' sacking

Julio Cesar: Not surprised that Mark Hughes was sacked

Rangers are still without a win after 15 games of the season, but have salvaged a point apiece from their last two fixtures.

Harry Redknapp was brought in to replace Hughes in November, but the Brazilian goalkeeper has a lot of sympathy for the man who brought him to west London from Inter Milan in the summer.

"Mark is a good person and I'm so sad about the situation which has happened to him," says Cesar.

"When the team don't win and results aren't right the coach is the first person to pay but I feel guilty about this.

"The players go on the pitch and everybody has a percentage of fault. It was not a big surprise that Mark Hughes got sacked, it was normal.

"If you go 13 games without a win it's very difficult for a coach to stay.

"He was a good coach with good ideas. But what happened to him has happened to many coaches throughout the world."

Redknapp: Beat drop, then party

Harry Redknapp: No reason to party at Loftus Road

Redknapp banned Christmas parties at Tottenham after a raucous and unauthorised trip to Dublin three years ago was proceeded by a home defeat to Wolves.

His successor Andre Villas-Boas said this week that he is happy for his squad to have "two or three" festive get-togethers, but QPR's current plight means Redknapp has no plans to do the same at his new club.

With Rangers seven points from safety after a winless run of 15 matches, the 65-year-old thinks his players do not deserve a party.

Indeed the only celebrating that QPR will undertake this year is if they manage to avoid a potentially crippling relegation to the Championship.

"I'm not mad about footballers having Christmas parties," said Redknapp.

"I have been doing this job an awful long time and I find it's nothing but aggravation. Almost every club has had aggro' at some time.

"The lads go out, photographers are waiting to take pictures of them late at night and you d on't need it really.

"With the position we're in we have nothing to celebrate. We need to concentrate on getting results and if we get out of trouble we will have a big party at the end of the year.

"They had the whole summer off to have all the parties they wanted and get two and a half months of holidays - they can go anywhere and do what they want. This is the busiest time of the year."

Redknapp warned there would be no quick fix to QPR's problems when he was appointed two weeks ago and that much has been clear from his first two games in charge.

Rangers struggled to a draw in Redknapp's opener at Sunderland and the Londoners came from behind to take a point against Aston Villa at home last weekend.

Should they fail to beat fellow strugglers Wigan at the DW Stadium on Saturday, QPR will become the only club in Premier League history not to win any of their first 16 matches.

Redknapp has been pleased with the efforts of his players , but he admits QPR's current predicament troubles him 24/7.

"My only concern and focus is trying to get some results at QPR," Redknapp said.

"That's where my mind is all day every day and all night.

"I've been focusing on trying to get us ready to get a win tomorrow.

"If we do that then our season could take off."

Redknapp's chances of success will depend, to a certain extent, on the club's activity in the transfer market.

The former Spurs boss will next week meet with QPR chairman Tony Fernandes for the first time since he replaced Mark Hughes.

Having ploughed so much money in to the club since he bought it, Redknapp acknowledges Fernandes may be loathe to fund a lavish spending spree, and he may instead look to the loan market for solutions to his problems.

"We will sit down and the owners will have a look at the situation," Redknapp said.

"Maybe we won't have to spend any money. Maybe we can pick up a couple of loans. It's a case of knowing who is around, knowing who is available and who can do a job for you."

Redknapp was coy on being linked with Shanghai Shenhua striker Nicolas Anelka.

"I don't know what the situation is with him. If he is available he is a player who I think would be of interest to people," he said.

But he was more forthcoming on Tal Ben Haim, who Redknapp confirmed is on trial at the west London club following his release from Portsmouth.

"I am having a look at him," Redknapp added.

"He's a good defender who has a great attitude. We will just see where we go in the next couple of weeks."

Transfer news: Tal Ben Haim handed QPR trial spell by Harry Redknapp

Tal Ben Haim: On trial with QPR

The Israel international has been without a club since he left Portsmouth in August, but he has been invited to train with the Rs this week.

"I am having a look at him, he's a good defender, he's a good lad and has a great attitude," said Redknapp.

"He looks very fit and I have let him come in and train, we will just see where we go in the next couple of weeks."

Ben Haim has not played any senior football since Israel suffered a 4-0 defeat to Russia in their World Cup qualifier in September.

He is rumoured to be joining Chinese Super League club Guangzhou, who have recently announced the signing of former Everton striker Yakubu.

Guangzhou have claimed Ben Haim has agreed a deal with them, and that he will make his debut in China in January.

QPR cancel Christmas party

Harry Redknapp: Needs to work his magic on struggling on QPR

Rangers are seven points adrift of safety after 15 matches and are still searching for their first win of the campaign, despite spending heavily during the summer.

It is understood that the decision to shelve plans for the traditional end-of-year party was made by the players.

New manager Harry Redknapp, who replaced the sacked Mark Hughes last month, oversees his third match in charge at Wigan on Saturday.

QPR midfielder Samaba Diakite eager to repay fans following tough start

Samba Diakite: Ready to repay the faith shown by supporters following a tough st

Diakite, 23, made his move permanent to Loftus Road in the summer transfer window from French club Nancy, but has since failed to produce his best.

The Mali international joined on loan for the latter half of last season but has seen this current campaign disrupted after he returned home due to personal reasons, and he is quick to acknowledge the support he received from everybody involved at QPR.

Now back in London full-time, he is raring to repay the faith shown by the supporters as he looks to fire his team off the foot of the table.

"It was a difficult start for me this season. I was quite ill, so it was quite difficult for me," he told the club's official website.

"Thanks to the support of the fans, the staff, the manager and the rest of the players I came through that tough time and I feel much better now."

The arrival of Harry Redknapp at the London club has seen optimism levels rise, and Diakite believes the team is good eno ugh to stay in the division thanks to the experienced manager.

"We've got a very good manager here. A good coach who knows all about the Premier League," he said.

"We are together as a team and all that matters now is that we get results and get out of this position we are in.

"Harry is a big manager, a big coach. He has great qualities and knows how to interact with players.

"He has the drive that players love. The players are working hard for him. We are adapting to his methods and we feel we will get wins soon."

Meanwhile, QPR have cancelled their Christmas party due to their lowly position in the Barclays Premier League table.

It is understood the decision to shelve plans for the traditional end-of-year party was made by the players.

Ivory Coast winger Abdul Kader Keita is keen on a move to the Premier League

Abdul Kader Keita: Hoping to join a Premier League club

Keita recently departed Qatari club Al Saad and is on the lookout for a new side, with Sunderland, Southampton, QPR and West Brom all linked with the 31-year-old.

A number of top French clubs are also thought to be keen on the Ivorian but the forward, who has already played in Ligue 1 with Lille and Lyon, would rather join the English top-flight.

He is keen to pit himself against some of the Premier League's top left-backs, including Ashley Cole and Patrice Evra.

Keita said: "I would love to test myself against the best left backs of this world, who are all in the Premier League; Cole, Evra, (Gael) Clichy, (Leighton) Baines.

"Hopefully that dream will come true for me in a couple of weeks' time.

"My agent is working on it in England."

Redknapp ready for vital month

Harry Redknapp: Hoping for turnaround in fortunes

The Hoops sit bottom of the Premier League after a winless start to the campaign that yesterday extended to 15 matches, equalling a record set by Swindon in the 1993/94 season.

QPR have just six points to their name after the 1-1 home draw with fellow strugglers Aston Villa - a game that kicks off a month that recently-appointed boss Redknapp believes will be vital.

"I think this December is decisive," the experienced boss said. "You've got to see where you are then, haven't you?

"If you're in touch, we can get a couple of wins and keep ourselves in there, then great have a go.

"If not, you've got to be careful. We've got to look at it and see where we are.

"Hopefully we are in touching distance and can get a couple of players in that can make the difference and get out of it that way.

"At the moment, I've got what I've got and we've got to get out of it with this lot.

"We've got to close the gap, get ourselves within at least touching distance of fourth from bottom and if we can do that I am sure we will have a go in January."

A key problem for QPR seems to be their unbalanced squad, with some areas overloaded with players and others severely lacking.

Redknapp hopes a good December will persuade the powers that be to bring in some new faces when the transfer window reopens, although he is wary of the high turnover of players at Loftus Road in recent times.

"We are okay in some positions and desperately short in others," the former Tottenham boss said.

"Obviously we're short of front players, we're short at centre half.

"I wouldn't spend any money if we were still in a dangerous position in January like we are.

"I wouldn't want to spend any money. I don't think it would be fair on the owners to spend any money. I'd advise them not to.

"If you're still adrift, what's the point? What you going to do? Load yourself up with players and have mor e big wages? That's not the point.

"If we're within touching distance come January, I am sure they will have a go and get one or two, but if they're not then I don't think they should, really.

"They bought 12 or 14 players in during the summer and they can't keep buying players, spending their money, upping the wage bill. They can't keep doing it."

Rather ironically, the star players yesterday were those that helped them achieve promotion from the Championship a year and a half ago.

Jamie Mackie's header earned QPR a point after they had fallen behind to an early Brett Holman goal, while Clint Hill hit the bar late on as they desperately searched for a winner.

"We needed that goal," Redknapp added. "If it had gone in, I think the place would have lifted off and we would have come in absolutely flying.

"To go to Wigan next week weekend with a win under our belt would have been massive for us, but we have to go there and try to win."

Reds away, Saints host holders

FA Cup: Draw for third round made on Sunday

The draw for the third round of the competition was made at Wembley on Sunday by Fabrice Muamba and Ledley King.

Two non-league sides must fight it out for the right to host Liverpool.

Lincoln and Mansfield drew 3-3 at Sincil Bank on Saturday and the replay will carry the bounty of a lucrative home meeting with Brendan Rodgers' men.

Rafael Benitez's Chelsea will begin their defence of the trophy with a tough-looking all-Premier League tie at St Mary's.

The two sides have yet to meet in the league this season and last met in the FA Cup in 1977 when Saints knocked out the Blues in a third-round replay.

Perhaps the most attractive third-round tie, though, sends Manchester United to West Ham.

Sir Alex Ferguson's 11-time winners beat the Hammers 1-0 in the league last week, but the two have enjoyed some memorable cup battles over the years, including when Paolo Di Canio scored the only goal of a surprise 1-0 West Ham win in 2001.< /p>

Premier League champions Manchester City host Gianfranco Zola's Watford, while Arsenal, whose last trophy was the 2005 FA Cup, must head to Swansea, the side who sent them off their own field to a chorus of boos with a 2-0 win on Saturday.

There is a tie for the nostalgics at White Hart Lane where Tottenham have been paired with Coventry, evoking memories of City's famous 3-2 final win over Spurs in 1987.

Everton face would-be giant-killers in the form of Cheltenham or Hereford, who play on Monday.

Elsewhere for the Premier League sides, 2011 finalists Stoke head to Championship leaders Crystal Palace, Newcastle travel to Brighton who beat them last season, and Fulham are at home to Blackpool.

Seven-time winners Aston Villa welcome Ipswich to the midlands, Bournemouth travel to Wigan and Reading go to Crawley, whose director of football is former Royals boss Steve Coppell.

Bottom-of-the-table QPR lock horns with West Brom, Norwich go to Championship strugglers Peterborough and 1973 winners Sunderland are at Bolton.

Hastings United, the lowest-ranked team left, have the lure of a trip to Middlesbrough if they beat Harrogate Town in a replay, while Barrow or Macclesfield will be at home to Cardiff.

The other games put Charlton up against Huddersfield, Barnsley against Burnley, Leicester against Burton and Millwall against Preston.

League One leaders Tranmere go to Derby, Aldershot face Rotherham or Notts County, Sheffield United head to Accrington or Oxford and Nottingham Forest play Oldham.

Hull boss Steve Bruce, a winner with Manchester United, will host Leyton Orient, Blackburn meet Bristol City, Leeds and Birmingham lock horns, Bury or Southend meet Bradford or Brentford, Wolves go to Luton and finally, MK Dons go to Sheffield Wednesday after beating AFC Wimbledon 2-1.

FA Cup third-round draw in full:

Crystal Palace v Stoke, Brighton v Newcastle, Tottenham v C oventry, Wigan v Bournemouth, Fulham v Blackpool, Aston Villa v Ipswich, Charlton v Huddersfield, Barrow or Macclesfield v Cardiff, Barnsley v Burnley, Manchester City v Watford, Swansea v Arsenal, Leicester v Burton Albion, Millwall v Preston, Cheltenham Town or Hereford United v Everton, Derby v Tranmere, Crawley v Reading, Aldershot v Rotherham or Notts County, Middlesbrough v Harrogate Town or Hastings United, Accrington or Oxford United v Sheffield United, Southampton v Chelsea, QPR v West Brom, Peterborough v Norwich, Lincoln City or Mansfield v Liverpool, Bolton v Sunderland, Nottingham Forest v Oldham, West Ham v Manchester United, Hull City v Leyton Orient, Blackburn v Bristol City, Leeds United v Birmingham, Bury or Southend v Bradford or Brentford, Luton v Wolves, Sheffield Wednesday v MK Dons.

Ties to be played over the weekend of 5 and 6 January, 2013.

Harry Redknapp's first home game as QPR manager ends in stalemate against Aston Villa

Lichaj and Hoilett: Battling at Loftus Road

Villa took the lead against the run of play thanks to Brett Holman's piledriver, but Jamie Mackie restored parity with a deft header to rescue a point.

The result means Rangers equalled an unwanted Premier League record of 15 winless games at the start of the new season - an abysmal start that is only matched by the Swindon side of 1993/94.

The Rs boss had never previously lost a Premier League home debut as a manager, but that record looked under serious threat despite dominating early possession.

They were hit with a real sucker punch after eight minutes as Holman scored a first goal for Villa.

The Australian collected Ashley Westwood's pass on the edge of the area before unleashing a left-foot stunner past Robert Green, despite the goalkeeper's best efforts.

However, the Hoops hit back 10 minutes later as Mackie hit the target with a deft header into the far corner after excellent build-up play by Jose Bosingwa and Samba Diakite.

Shaun Wright-Phillips was unlucky not to give the hosts the lead soon after as his right-foot shot struck the base of the post with Brad Guzan beaten.

There were concerns late on in the half when Stephane Mbia was stretchered off after colliding with Gabby Agbonlahor in the middle of the park and the Cameroonian went to hospital for a precautionary check-up.

Clint Hill hit the crossbar with an 80th-minute header from an Adel Taarabt corner, but that was as close as they came in the second period as Paul Lambert's side defended resolutely and held on for a share of the spoils.

QPR are now seven points adrift of the safety line while Villa climbed above Sunderland into 16th position, albeit having played two games more.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp looks to positives from 1-1 draw with Aston Villa

Harry Redknapp: Remaining positive after 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Aston V

Brett Holman scored the opening goal for Villa with a powerful strike but Jamie Mackie headed home to secure a point for the R's in Redknapp's first home game in charge.

"There's no shortage of spirit and no shortage of effort and I thought we played ever so well. We just couldn't get that second goal," Redknapp told Sky Sports News.

"Villa kept the ball in the second half. That made it difficult as they knocked it around without going anywhere but I don't remember them having a real opportunity second half.

"We just have to keep going. We are in a difficult position, there's no doubt about that.

"We have just got to believing, work hard and try and get that first win. That's we need to get us up and running."

Redknapp admitted he was pleased with the positive response he got from the Loftus Road crowd but insisted it was matters on the pitch that were crucial.

"It was good but the most important thing is the game. I thought we played well today after a difficult start," he added.

"After we went one-down we played some good football and hit the woodwork several time. We had all the chances really and I thought we deserved to win.

"We needed a win today but it didn't come and we will have to go again next week and get that first win under our belts."

Redknapp also confirmed that Stephane Mbia did not suffer serious injury despite having to be stretchered off after colliding with Gabby Agbonlahor.

"He's OK, he's just got a bit of a neck injury. He's gone for a check-up but I don't think there are any problems and he should be fit for next week," he said.
